Readers unfamiliar with the Carolinas will be drawn to his portrayal of both the good and the bad during that turbulent time and how those days still influence life in the South today. Shinn rejects the easy caricatures one often sees in books about the South, making his novel a great read for discussions groups and book clubs. Dixie Autumn is perfect for those of us who enjoy a great mystery that easily might have happened in a small southern town during some of its most difficult years of racial divide. Having a surprise ending for me was a great way to cap this well-crafted novel.

EXCELLENT BOOK , I WAS BROUGHT UP IN A SMALL TOWN, IN TN, AS A CHILD I REMEMBER SEGRAGATION BEING A BIG ISSUE WITH MY PARENTS . JERRY'S BOOK BROUGHT BACK SOME MEMORIES AND DIFFINETLY PUT THINGS INTO PRSPECTIVE AS AN ADULT .
IT WAS AN EASY READ AND THE MYSTERY ADDED SUSPENCE TO THE BOOK . I LOOK FORWARD TO READING OTHER BOOKS BY MR. SHINN
The story line was easy to follow. A perspective we all need to learn about regarding our country's history. A good read and one we can all (from the South) readily identify with.

Having read Jerry Shinn's thoughtful and often provocative columns during his newspapering years at The Charlotte Observer, I knew this book would be a good read. Shinn writes about the conflicting concerns that those with a conscience struggled through during the height of the Civil Rights era -- and the ethical struggles that journalists sometimes go through when a story hits too close to home. This is a first-rate tale, spun by a masterful writer who has long helped his readers sort through difficult issues and recognize the stakes involved.
I was there. Mr. Shinn has captured the times perfectly. His "interviews" with various members of his fictional community reveal the variety of reactions to the days of segregation and the turmoil of its aftermath.
